Remember white racial activist Michael Carothers? He was the one who thought two black men were trying to carjack him in Columbus, Georgia, and so he used pepper spray on one of them to stop them. He was arrested on August 23rd, 2011, initially charged with a misdemeanor simple battery charge, but then when Carothers' National Alliance membership was revealed, the charges were upgraded to felony aggravated assault.
Fast forward to May 2012, when the Council of Conservative Citizens reported that Carothers accepted a plea bargain back on November 15th, 2011 after the judge ruled that an incident from 1999 could be admitted as evidence. Although prosecutors asked for four years in prison, the judge sentenced him to one year imprisonment followed by nine years’ probation and banishment from the six-county Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit, which includes Muscogee, Harris, Chattahoochee, Taylor, Talbot and Marion counties, during his probation.
Now Carothers wants to withdraw his guilty plea, because banishment from the local area would make him homeless after he's released from prison. Since he's broken up with his girlfriend, he won't be able to live with her in Dothan, Alabama after his release. The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that on June 29th, 2012, Carothers appeared at a hearing on a motion submitted by him earlier asking for the plea withdrawal. Carothers also argues that his plea wasn't voluntarily given and his counsel was ineffective. During the hearing, Carothers argued that he's the only person in Columbus to be indicted for aggravated assault because pepper spray was the weapon, asserting that his political beliefs motivated authorities.
Muscogee County Superior Court Judge Bobby Peters, who originally sentenced Carothers, reminded him that his case would return to square one if he withdrew his guilty plea. If convicted at trial, Carothers would face one to 20 years in prison. Carothers confirmed he wanted to proceed, and Judge Peters then recessed the hearing pending receipt of the complete transcript of Carothers' guilty plea hearing. The CofCC noted that during the original trial, Judge Peters seemed to agree that the case was a character assassination as much as anything else, which implies that Peters is trying to preserve an apolitical environment in his courtroom.
More bias against white racialism is expressed in the comments to the Ledger-Enterprise's latest story. A suspected anti-racist regurgitated a known falsehood:
AmericanWoman July 21st around 4:00 A.M:
Michael Carothers of Michael Weaver is a member of the National Alliance. There are still people who do not know what that is. It is a white supremacist organization. Tim McVeigh, who bombed the OK. FBI Murrah Building was a member of the National Alliance. We have others who are members here locally, including, at least one who was an official...
The information about McVeigh is partially false; he was never a member of the National Alliance. This is further verified by a 2004 Buffalo News article no longer available on line, which stated McVeigh "said he also called a national neo-Nazi organization, the National Alliance, for the same purpose. But McVeigh said he never got help from either group." The fact that Tim McVeigh read and sold copies of the Turner Diaries does not make him a member of the National Alliance any more than walking into a garage makes me a car.
Then again, anti-racists have no interest in facts about the white racialist movement. Their sole desire is to suppress it, so they'll regurgitate unproven folklore and present the worst examples as typical in their zeal to discredit the Cause.
Assuming good behavior, the latest Carothers would get out of prison would be on August 22nd. Carothers' father asks that those who sympathize with him send him letters of support and contributions to his commissary account. Those wishing to write Michael Carothers can contact him at:
