National Socialist Movement Cadre Show Up At Maricopa County Attorney Candidate Bill Montgomery's Press Conference; Montgomery Disavows NSM Support
On April 30th, 2010, the Arizona Republic and Azfamily.com report that five members of the National Socialist Movement showed up at a press conference held by Maricopa County Attorney candidate Bill Montgomery. Montgomery is supported by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and the NSM cadre wanted to “support Sheriff Joe’s candidate for County Attorney,” according to the group's leader, J.T. Ready (pictured in the foreground, upper left).
The NSM cadre were decked out in black riot gear and wearing rifles slung over their shoulders. J.T. Ready explained that they came armed and prepared to fight any illegals or their advocates who showed up. “We’re not going to stand idly by while we’re genocided (sic) off our country,” Ready said. “We’re being displaced".
However, the expression of support may have backfired. Montgomery was reportedly appalled their presence and tried to get the men to leave. He quickly distanced himself from the NSM contingent. “I reject that,” Montgomery said of the neo-Nazi support. Joe Arpaio also disavowed the NSM support, saying "I don't want them there either, believe me. I didn't invite them there. I don't condone this type of activity or organization."
Phoenix New Times blogger Stephen Lemons also reported on this story, but added nothing of significance. However, the New Times separately reports that Bill Montgomery may not be returning Arpaio's support. The New Times claims the existence of an audio tape in which Montgomery allegedly questions Sheriff Joe Arpaio's mental fitness and leadership ability. Besides reflecting on Arpaio's many senior moments, Montgomery told county official Don Stapley he believed the infamous court-tower investigation launched by Sheriff Arpaio's office may have been orchestrated by Arpaio's money-conscious staff. Yet Montgomery still later teamed up with Arpaio in hopes of giving a boost to his campaign. Montgomery mailed a letter from Arpaio to the sheriff's supporters a couple of weeks ago, in which Arpaio praises the candidate and pledges to help him get elected.
If Bill Montgomery has secretly stabbed Joe Arpaio in the back, he deserves whatever embarassment he can get. Perhaps the NSM did Arpaio -- and Phoenix -- a favor by showing up at Montgomery's press conference.
