A Study In Contrasts: The Jim Bob Duggar Family In Tontitown, Arkansas Vs. The Latrica Ryan Family In Flint, Michigan

Large families, once the rule in the United States, have become the isolated exception. Most parents bring forth 2-3 kids (more in Utah). Some families have more pets than kids.

However, two exceptions to the rule recently surfaced in the news. The family of Jim Bob Duggar in Tontitown, Arkansas and the family of Latrica Ryan have received publicity, albeit for different reasons. And there are some other differences between the two families worthy of mention.

The Duggar Family (pictured above, before number 18 arrived) made the news when Michelle Duggar recently gave birth to her 18th child. The baby girl, named Jordyn-Grace Makiya Duggar, is the eighth daughter for Michelle and husband Jim Bob, who also have 10 sons. She weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 inches long. Jim Bob and Michelle have parented all 18 kids.

The Duggars receive no public assistance and are debt-free. They live off the rental income from commercial property they own, also debt-free. In addition, they live within their means; which is a frugal existence that permits Mr. Duggar to spend most of his days, right now, with his older sons, putting the finishing touches on their new home. Mrs. Duggar is a stay-at-home mom who takes the lead in home-schooling the children. While they don't have a precise budget, it takes about $5,000 a month to operate their household. They don't use credit cards. They purchase their clothes at a thrift store that benefits the homeless in northwest Arkansas. Contrast this to the family of Latrica Ryan (pictured above) in Flint, Michigan. She has 10 kids. However, she's not married, so there's no man in residence to provide paternal interaction. The 10 kids have been sired by four different men. Only two of the men pay any type of child support at all. And, unlike the Duggars, the Ryans do NOT support themselves, accepting significant state and private assistance (some extended family members also chip in).

Admittedly, Ryan is not a total loser, though. According to this article in the Flint Journal, Ryan said she last worked part-time as a lunch aide at a Flint school and would like to work in a children's nursery someday. She has received help on and off from FACED and gets state assistance, along with sometimes turning to local missions for food. And she said she volunteers at her kids' schools and is involved in their activities. To her credit, six of her kids are on their school's honor roll. But which family has the better structure? Which family is the better role model? The Duggar Family is complete and self-supporting, with both a father and mother in residence, and the same father sired all of the kids. The Ryan Family is incomplete and dependent upon public assistance, the kids were not all sired by the same man, four different baby daddies were involved, and only two of them pay any type of support. And of course, they only pay support for those who they personally sired.

The Duggar Family - order. The Ryan Family - chaos.

Does race matter? According to black columnist Walter Williams, it does. He states that the illegitimacy rate among blacks is 70 percent. Among whites, it's 30 percent.
