A savage black career criminal on the lam gunned down three Oakland police officers and wounded two others on Saturday March 21st, 2009 before being shot and killed himself by SWAT officers. Media stories from CNN, the San Jose Mercury-News, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Oakland Tribune, and KPIX Channel 5 in San Francisco. The carnage began when two officers stopped a 1995 Buick sedan in east Oakland at approximately 1:08 p.m. The driver, subsequently identified as 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon, opened fire, killing 40-year-old Sgt. Mark Dunakin and gravely wounding 41-year-old officer John Hege. Dunakin was an 18-year veteran of the force.
Mixon then fled on foot, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic. Officers checking on an anonymous tip found Mixon barricaded inside an apartment building at around 3:20 p.m. Police said Mixon fired an assault rifle at officers who came into the building to arrest him. Two members of the SWAT team, 43-year-old Sgt. Ervin Romans, who had been with the force since 1996, and 35-year-old Sgt. Daniel Sakai, who had been with the force since 2000, were killed, while a third officer, grazed by a bullet, was treated and released. Acting Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said police returned fire, killing a man subsequently identified as Mixon, a resident of Oakland. YouTube video of Associated Press report embedded below:
Reached by telephone late Saturday, Hege's father, Dr. John Hege said, "He had an injury to his brain ... and it's not clear he can survive. ... It is a stunning thing to face, although we were always aware of the risks". The latest on Hege is that he is still in grave condition, with no sign of improvement since being admitted to Highland Hospital on Saturday. Update: Huffington Post now reporting that Hege has died.
Lovelle Mixon was wanted on a no-bail arrest warrant for violating parole on a previous assault with a deadly weapon conviction. He also had previous convictions in Alameda County for grand theft and possession of marijuana.
Oakland's Black Progressive Mayor Ron Dellums expressed himself. "In these moments, words are extraordinarily inadequate. We come together in shock, in grief, in sadness and sorrow. Our hearts go out to the officers' families who are experiencing a level of tragedy that goes beyond our ability to comprehend. These folks leave their homes in the morning, with every expectation of returning, but they did not". Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton has expressed his department's condolences, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered flags lowered to half-staff at the State Capitol.
For others who want to express condolences, guestbooks have been set up in memory of Mark Dunakin, Erv Romans, and Dan Sakai. The last time an Oakland officer was killed was in 2004 when William Seuis, 39, died in a hit-and-run crash. Before Saturday, 47 Oakland police officers had been killed in the line of duty since the department was formed in 1867. But not all community members are saddened; the Oakland Tribune reported that some black passers-by taunted the investigating officers at the scene, and comments to the various local media outlets reported some isolated celebrations within Oakland's black community. And Mixon's family is actually defending him; a cousin of Mixon said Sunday that Mixon was "not a monster". One person who was in the area posted the following on Stormfront:
I was there: I turned down 72 Ave headed toward Bancroft. Two blocks before Bancroft the street was cordened off by police. There were at least 30 police cars visible. Crowds of angry Blacks were jeering at the police shouting: "This is get-back Whitey!" and "My heart bleeds for you White Boys" The area was unsafe for any White person. I heard from other witnesses later that groups of Black-Africans followed the Ambulances to Highland Hospital and continued to shout and jeer at the injured police officers.
This is why I suspect Mixon's motive was racial. This is typical of the equivocating attitude towards crime and law enforcement by black Americans nationwide, and it contributes towards the disproportionately high crime rate by blacks. Remember that 20,000 blacks rallied in Jena, Louisiana in support of the Jena Six thugs who mob-assaulted Justin Barker. The "stop snitching" mentality also took root within the black community. Misogynistic, homicidal gangsta rap also took root within the black community. Efforts to counter this attitude by responsible Blacks are having only a limited effect.
